I strive to encourage students to be responsible, independent thinkers. It is my goal to facilitate learning in the classroom and gradually, as the students become more responsible for themselves, step back and allow the students to lead the way in their learning experiences. We work together, as a class, to create a safe, positive environment where it’s ok to make mistakes, and to try new things. I encourage students to work both independently and collaboratively. As independent learners, my students work to improve their own personal goals and they become more responsible for their own work, behaviors, and selves. Working collaboratively, students often find the confidence they need to explore, ask questions, analyze, and actively engage in their learning. Working both independently and collaboratively allows students to take learning to “another level” as they expand their thinking and become more inquisitive.

I have been teaching for 26 years - 10 years in public school and 16 years here at SJS. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Counseling from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC and a Master’s Degree in Middle School Education (Math/Science) from the University of Georgia. Before moving to 5th grade, my teaching roles in the past have included middle school math, science, and reading. In addition to teaching, I have been the advisor for Mathcounts, National Junior Honor Society, Engineering Day, and two Global Youth Service Days. This year, I am an assistant coach for the middle school tennis team and the advisor for the Safety Patrol Program.

I have two children who attended St. Joseph from kindergarten through 8th grade. Lauren (26) and Allison (22). My husband, Bo, owns his own landscape and maintenance business, Athena Lawn Care, and we have been married for 30 years. We are members of First Presbyterian Church where my husband and I are both Elders. Even though I am not Catholic, I have always felt welcomed here in the school community. Besides spending time with family, friends, and our new dog, Tucker, I love to play tennis, golf, read, garden, cook and paint.
