Lunch Program

Exciting Program Changes for 2019-2020!

Healthy habits in childhood can directly impact health in adulthood! Most of us know that nutrition can play a role in disease prevention, but we often don’t think about how eating can impact brain health and learning. When we eat a balanced diet, we fuel our brains with the nourishment it needs to stay attentive and focused while we are absorbing and processing new information.

Supporting healthy eating patterns in children goes beyond just what is being offered in the home. Schools play an important role in establishing healthy habits in childhood because children are encouraged to try new foods when they observe what their peers are eating. Even the pickiest of eaters can learn to like new foods with continued exposure. This is why St. Joseph is making some changes in the lunch offerings for the 2019-2020 school year.

Our first goal is to expose children to more fruits and vegetables to better align with the USDA recommendation of filling half our plates with fruits and vegetables at each meal. Our second priority is to decrease sugar consumption by not including a dessert with each meal. We are not suggesting that kids shouldn’t be eating dessert, but we are trying to establish healthy eating patterns that support limiting added sugars. Current guidelines recommend 35-45 grams of added sugar for elementary children and 50-55 grams for middle school age (one Chick-fil-a cookie is 30 g). We have modified some old favorites while adding some new options that we hope you will encourage your children to try. We appreciate your support as we work to nurture the whole child; mind, spirit and body, and look forward to a happy, holy and helpful (and healthy) year!
